The Flash has a way of stumbling toward the finish line in its season finales, it’s just the way this show works. But this truncated back half of the season has left Team Flash with what, eight episodes to set up and solve the mystery of the mirror woman, fix Barry’s speed, and do whatever Ralph was trying to figure out with that mystery woman? Let’s see how this all plays out.
Okay so the Mirror Maid is out of her Madewell cardigan and into a leather cat suit. I knew that mirror lady was a freak! ANYWAY Killer Frost is being sent to the Arctic to be with Caitlin’s mom, but then Caitlin’s mom shows up to say “I’m your mom too.” PHEW! That’s taken care of.
There’s no artificial speed force so Barry can’t run around town looking for mirror lady so instead of doing some kind of tech search at STAR Labs, the team meets in Barry’s office – remember how he has a job? Ralph gives them the diamond from his storyline and BINGO BANGO it has a treasure map that leads them to one of Central City’s many warehouses. Barry and Ralph check it out and it turns out to be Black Hole’s depository of bad guy stuff (guns, bombs, bank records, etc). It also has whatever Ralph needs for his storyline. Barry finds Mirror Singh pouring gasoline all over the Black Hole warehouse and before setting the whole place on fire he gives a bunch of exposition about what’s about to happen. Thanks Singh!
SO! Barry visits McCulloch and tells him the mirrorverse stuff, but he knows all about that so we just fast forward through a bunch of exposition and McCulloch does whatever the opposite of saving the cat is and says that he’s not going to save Iris because she’s an enemy. Also, if she’s been in the mirrorverse her brain has been warped. Barry tells him about the burned down warehouse and he no-sells the whole thing but then he walks away and basically does a big collar-grab-yikes face.
Meanwhile in the mirrorverse, Iris realizes that she can find Singh out in the regularverse, however her brain is seriously cooking from all of this mirror living.
In Ralph’s storyline, he brings Sue back to her parents, which she’s not happy about … sort of? She asks him to stop helping them out and that Carver, who I guess is from earlier in the season, has had a change of heart. Sorry about your bum storyline, Ralph. Remember the Three? That bad ass group of meta chicks in silver suits? Well they get taken out by Mirror Maid in maybe 45 seconds. It sucks that such a cool group of assassins is wasted, but it’s shot in one of those one-take things that The Flash did in the Doctor Blood season.
McCulloch comes crawling back to Barry and he’d now like to have federal help, please and thank you.
Frost and her mom reconnect and agree that they’re both “really awesome.” You know, I’m actually happy that this isn’t a whole episode. So I guess some of this truncating was actually good.
At CCPD, Carver is ready to go into federal hiding and UH OH Singh shows up to take him to Mirror Maid. Singh says that if Barry hands over Carver then they’ll give him Iris and they’ll be squarsies. Nash sees Barry struggling with something and transports them all to STAR Labs. After arriving, Nash sees one of the Wellses telling him that there’s no way that the Barry Allen they know would do that. Don’t worry, it’s not a mirror Barry, it’s just a Barry who isn’t feeling so hot about the decisions he’s made in his life.
McCulloch Industries is getting teched up with some kind of force field tech while Carver loads himself into his all-concrete panic room. Every member of Team Flash gets into McCulloch and all of the storylines merge into some kind of amorphous superhero blob. Sue is there and ready to kill Carver and Ralph is ready with a “you don’t have to do this” speech. Nash and Allegra-D reach some kind of ’80s movie understanding, and Barry is watching Carver.
The forcefield tech goes down and the Three waltz into the building and explain that Mirror Maid has paid them or given them a choice or something and now they’re working for her. A CW superhero fight breaks out and Carver uses some kind of app to … call security? Do we need an app for that?
Barry runs into Singh who turns into Mirror Maid and then she blasts him with a Mega Man cannon. THEN! We get one of the more stylish fight scenes from The Flash. The screen splits into multiple frames so we can see multiple angles of the fight. It’s pretty cool. Also, there are a bunch of pink and purple lights. It’s kind of like an X-Men comic from the ’90s. Sue joins the fight and holy shit this is a long fight scene. Most of the CW CGI is concentrated on Ralph’s stretchy stuff so it’s all pretty cool. If there’s another season of The Flash, this would definitely be something that I’d like to see more of.
Something I’d like to see less of is Mirror Maid giving a bunch of bad guy exposition to Carver. She’s just an awful villain, right? She’s overpowered, does nothing but give speeches, and just kind of does whatever for no reason. I’ll take Evil Barry over this any day. ANYWAY, Mirror Maid uses her powers to break a mirror and then shoots all the shards at Carver. Barry gets in the way and he gets glassed. Then Mirror Maid kills Carver after some more exposition. Barry lies on the floor bleeding out while the rest of Team Flash gets ready to fight The Three. Mirror Maid tells them to stand down and I guess that’s that. She makes Barry leave, saying that it’s her building and that she’ll call the police if they don’t get off the grounds. Ouch.
The next day (I guess?) Mirror Maid gives a press conference saying that she’d been kidnapped by an international crime syndicate for the last six years and that she’ll be searching for her husband’s killers, just like OJ.
Sue is pleased as pie that Carver’s dead, it means she can get back to her normal life as a jewel thief. Unfortunately Mirror Maid is framing her for Carver’s murder, just like OJ.
Caitlin’s back and she reminds Barry that his real superpower is love, not speed, but uh … hey dummy, his actual superpower is speed (kind of like OJ). Her mom takes her to the Arctic and I guess we’ll see her next season.
Allegra-D is working on her crime board when Nash shows up to give her a Maguffin (a rock that makes her relive her worst memory) and his coffee. Also Joe’s here. Also a stirring orchestral score. The team agrees to save the people they love and that’s it.
IN THE EPILOGUE!
Iris says that she’s not going to give up on Barry and she realizes that she can control the mirror universe. Then she literally disappears into a weird geometric pattern. See you next time … whenever that is.
