This week’s episode was billed as the Season 5 finale, but the diligent Superfan will notice that there are still 3 more episodes listed on IMDB. Seems like this show got the Flash treatment and tripped over the finish line a tad prematurely.
Lex gets everything he ever wanted though, finally getting to see the inside of the Leviathan ship, which is basically just the Leviathan lair, because these people really like cocktails and card games, but also because let’s re-use props and set dressing wherever possible, shall we?
The ship is full of radiation, but Lex gets a special pin to wear that saves him from it. Because that’s how protection from radiation works. Brainy doesn’t get a pin though, because Lex wants to keep him in check until after the superfriends are safely dead.
The Leviathan folks have a ton of Kryptonite of course, and Lena offers to make Kara an anti-Kryptonite suit because she’s Team Good Guys now.
The Martians buy time by posing as decoy Supergirls while Lena works on the suit, and Alex joins the fight in her new superhero persona.
The eye makeup is great and all, but is she really going to spend the time applying it every time she has to fight crime? It doesn’t seem efficient, but then again the last time I put on eye makeup at all was March 12th, so I guess I’m not the best judge of these things.
Rama Khan has some buddies with him to even out the fight, and Nia’s still distracted by her visions of Brainy, so the good guys are really at a disadvantage here. Plus, Rama Khan and the gang are immortal, so there’s that.
Kelly calls with more bad news, that William has been missing ever since he went to find Eve. She and Alex go through all of Eve’s files trying to find out where she could be. Lena sees Alex and Kara work so well together and puts on her best pouty face for the camera that her sibling relationship isn’t so warm and fuzzy.
Brainy summons Girl Brainy from that one other episode, and she tells him that he can’t let his friends die just because she told him before that he has to team up with Lex Luthor. So he decides he’s going to put the Leviathan gods in the bottle from The Bottle Episode and just kind of keep them trapped that way, so he can defeat them without having to kill them, I guess. The bummer is that he does have to kill himself in the process because he’ll have to sneak onto the Leviathan ship without an anti-radiation pin. So Girl Brainy says she’ll go with him for moral support.
Meanwhile, the Obsidian Unity Fest is about to get under way, and Andrea lets Lex do the big introduction for some reason.
Kara gets sick of sitting around not being super while other people get the good plot lines, so she yells at Lena for not making the suit fast enough, and for not understanding how hard it is to speak your truth. She decides she’s totally over feeling bad that she hurt Lena’s feelings and decides to play it as if Lena was in the wrong the whole time which, she kind of was, but Kara annoys me so much I’m taking points away just for that.
They eventually get Eve’s location from Alex and Kelly so they can pause the drama for a little while. Kara decides she’s going to confront Eve even without the Kryptonite suit because that’s how much she can’t stand being around Lena any longer. Lena decides to tag along though, because she’s in full sad puppy mode, and Kara begrudgingly agrees.
Eve interrogates William about why he was following her and is about to shoot him when he gives her a classic “You’re a good person; you don’t want to do this” speech, and she cracks immediately and tells him the whole story about how Lex is gonna kill her mom. She shoots William anyway, but Supergirl shows up in time to cauterize the wound with her eyes. It’s a bit brutal.
Then all the other bad guys show up with their Kryptonite weapons. William and Lena go to get the anti-Kryptonite suit, which is apparently ready now and immediately flies over to Kara in a neat package and attaches itself to her so now she can fight Leviathan.
Dreamer and Megan Morris shows up and they all fight together, but Dreamer dreams a dream about Brainiac and it throws her off her game again. Megan Morris is like, “I can read your mind kind of but not really because you’re not a Martian and that’s not how it works, but maybe you should pay attention to what your dreams are telling you,” but Dreamer tells her that it’s just her guilt over telling Brainy to take off her personality inhibitors. Megan is like, “Maybe it’s not about you. Maybe something completely different is going on with him,” but Dreamer studied hard at the Kara Danvers School for Self-Importance, and she will hear none of this.
Brainy heads to the Leviathan lair with the bottle in his backpack. Girl Brainy is there too, but maybe only in his mind? I’m not sure how this is working. I guess that’s how it is when you’re only a first level intellect. It’s hard for him to breathe because of all the radiation, but he somehow manages to find exactly how to upload the gods into the bottle right away. It’s going to take ten minutes though. Can he live that long? It’s important that he does so that he can put the cap back on when it’s over or something.
Eve tells the Superfriends that Gemma is part of Leviathan and that they’re going to attack the Unity Festival, so Kara goes into VR to ruin everyone’s party and try to get them to go back to the real world. Meanwhile, Lex and Gemma drink champagne and fight over whether they should kill everyone right away or wait until there are more people there. Why kill 4 million people when you could kill 2 billion, amiright?
They know that Supergirl is in there though and that they have to get rid of her, so Gemma tells Andrea that she’s with Leviathan, and apparently in this universe Andrea thinks Leviathan is great, so she’s like, “Oh you need a favor? Anything.” And Gemma is like, “I’m gonna give you back your Shadow Lady power from the other universe and I’m gonna need you to kill Supergirl.” Andrea says no at first, but Gemma reminds her that it’s really cool to be rich, and Supegirl is trying to get people to unsubscribe from Obisidian, so Andrea agrees. Also there’s something about threatening her father in there too, but didn’t we just do that with Eve?
Lena duplicates Kara a billion times or so within the VR and Kara goes up to each individual person and gives them her canned speech about how real life is better. In about 20 seconds, with no follow-up questions, literally every single one of the hundreds of millions of people in the simulation, whether they speak English or not, decide that this blonde girl with the blue pants is right and they should scrap this thing they’ve been looking forward to for a long time and paid a lot of money for.
Meanwhile all the other good guys are still fighting the earthquake people. Brainy has to stay focused on not dying for five more minutes. Andrea comes into where Lena is with Supergirl’s IRL body and tries to kill her because they’re gonna kill her dad, but Lena stops her with a speech of her own about daddy issues.
Brainy’s bottle trick works and Lex watches as Gemma turns into some sort of electric skeleton special effect before disappearing. Lex runs to find Brainy at the Leviathan ship and is like, “Dude, what did you do?” Brainy gives a heroic dying speech about how Lex underestimated the power of friendship, but Lex is like yeah yeah I knew you’d save your friends, I just didn’t think you’d kill yourself, idiot. But it’s all good for Lex anyway because he can just go ahead and kill Supergirl with the god bottle, which is apparently also a bomb.
Nia has one last dream about Brainy and finally figures out that she should have listened to Megan Morris in the first place, and they run to try to save him.
Also, in case you were wondering, Eve’s mom is fine. She shows up and gives her a big hug. In a finale this rushed, was this really where we needed to spend screen time?
Supergirl and Lena make some more speeches and then hug it out and agree to go find Lex and stop him. Lex, however is working with Mama Luthor on Project God Bottle Bomb. Looks like I’ll have plenty of time to find a better name for that, because we’re done for the season, guys.
TO BE CONTINUED … ?
